Let the Old Dreams Die, by John Ajvide Lindqvist

A classic short story collection from the writer called Sweden's Stephen King that continues the breathtaking story begun in the internationally acclaimed classic Let the Right One In

Because of the two superb films made of John Ajvide Lindqvist's vampire masterpiece Let the Right One In, millions of people around the world know the story of Oskar and Eli and of their final escape from Blackeberg at the end of the novel. Now at last, in "Let the Old Dreams Die," the title story in this absolutely stunning collection, we get a glimpse of what happened next to the pair. Fans of Let the Right One In will have to read the story, which is destined to generate much word of mouth both among fans and online.

"Let the Old Dreams Die" is not the only stunner in this collection. In "Final Processing," Lindqvist also reveals the next chapter in the lives of the characters he created in Handling the Undead. "Equinox" is a story of a woman who takes care of her neighbor's house while they are away and readers will never forget what she finds in the house. Every story meets the very high standard of excellence and fright factor that Lindqvist fans have come to expect. From Publishers Weekly
In Lindqvist&'s commendable first short-fiction collection, people often are not what they seem, usually to a horrifying degree. The Border tells of a customs agent whose relationship with a suspected smuggler uncovers extraordinary truths about the agent&'s heritage. The celebrities whom a paparazzo photographer thinks he is snapping in Itsy Bitsy reveal pedigrees that are as eerie as they are inexplicable. A drowning victim who dies but is resuscitated in Eternal/Love comes back to his lover as something else, although still in human form. In addition to these tales of deceptive identities and their unsettling natures, the book features Final Processing, a sequel to Handling the Undead, and the title tale, a sequel to Let the Right One In that riffs poignantly on that novel&'s romantic relationship between a young boy and a vampire girl. Segerberg&'s translation is murky in places, but the originality of Lindqvist&'s ideas shines through. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Lindqvist’s short stories pack the same emotional punch as his novels. This collection includes sequels to two of his best-known works, Let the Right One In and Handling the Undead. Both are pleasing, if frightening, epilogues to their respective stories. Aside from those, there are atmospheric tales of people with strange origins and things to hide in The Border, urban monsters in A Village in the Sky, and the terrible thing a woman finds while house-sitting in Equinox. There’s also Eternal/Love, which explores the true horror of immortal love. Suffice it to say—this is only a small sampling of the stories presented here—that Lindqvist’s short pieces are terribly effective horror fiction, both in the sense of being deeply unnerving and rarely safe to read any night, and also in the sense of exploring the hidden, shadowy facets of human emotional lives. These are excellent examples of the form, and well worth reading—just not alone in a cold, dark house. --Regina Schroeder

Solid anthology from a great writer
By Reviewer
OVERALL REVIEW:

"Dreams" is a solid anthology - I liked six of the twelve stories a lot, enjoyed bits of four of the other ones, and disliked two, because of their odd writing ("To Put My Arms Around You, to Music" and "Paper Walls"). The stories that I was "meh" about sometimes ran too long ("Tindalos" and "Majken"), or were solid but forgettable trifles from a writer who regularly transcends this sort of tale-telling.

That said, Lindqvist does a solid job of indirectly linking the stories via mood, cultural references (e.g., The Smiths song "Shoplifters of the World Unite"; Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel "The Idiot"; etc.) and mining his familiar themes of life and death, in their variable forms.

Worth owning, if you're a die-hard fan of Lindqvist, or if you buy it for a reduced price. Or do what I did, and check it out from the library (if you're lucky enough to have one nearby).

STANDOUT STORIES:

1.) "The Border" - An inspections agent (Tina) discovers a major source of her emotional disconnection from her everyday life, as well as her sense of being "different". Good, mood-effective read.

2.) "Itsy Bitsy" - Effective fever dream about a photographer, his subjects and a "Twilight Zone"-esque mystery. Interesting, excellent.

3.) "The Substitute" - A middle-aged man's former classmate from thirty years prior shows up - just as strange he was back then - and unsettles the man anew. Good, pop culture-referencing read.

4.) "Eternal/Love" - Intriguing tale about a couple who test the bonds of death - or its lack - and love. Excellent, dramatic read.

5.) "Final Processing" - Satisfactory and tone-consistent dnouement to Lindqvist's novel "Handling the Undead", where a young man (Kalle Lilljewall) and his girlfriend (Flora) try to relieve the suffering of the government-kept undead. Good read that pushes all the right emotional buttons.

6.) "Let the Old Dreams Die" - This secondary character sequel to "Let the Right One In" (a.k.a. "Let Me In") reveals the fate of Oskar Eriksson and his "kidnapper" Eli. Solid, well-written (if indirectly told) follow-up to a stellar novel.

King Redux
By David
After many comparisons to Stephen King, the collection of short stories sets Lindqvist apart. Creating his own category, he has also created horror stories that are horrifying in their own unique way. Love/Eternal is the only story I have ever read that actually left me feeling an emotion of fear.

Lindqvist is Proving Himself a True Master of Suspense and Horror
By Rex
Even though John Ajvide Lindqvist does not like to be called "The Swedish Stephen King" it's very hard not to notice the similarities. With the exception of all the references to places in and around Stockholm, you could swear at times that you're reading a new collections of King stories. But in no way does that denigrate Lindqvist or his storytelling expertise. He's not a copy, but a fresh new take on horror and suspense and Let the Old Dreams Die is a fabulous collection.

For fans of two previous Lindqvist novels, Let the Right One In and Handling the Undead, this book contains long-awaited and fan-requested sequels to those books. Both are very satisfying and brilliant follow-ups to the earlier works. Those alone are worth the price of obtaining this volume, but the rest of it is extremely interesting, intriguing and entertaining as well. I can't think of a single story in this collection that I did not thoroughly enjoy. It has made me want to now read Harbor, from which there is a chapter included in this book.

Whether you are a Stephen King fan or not, I highly recommend you take a look at Lindqvist's work. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
