An Excellent Reference

Ac Electric Machines and Their Control by DA Torrey has quickly become one of my favorite books on power electronics and electric machines. Torrey organized the book according to his three-course sequence he has been teaching for more than a decade. The book primarily deals with the three major types of AC machines - permanent magnet, induction, and variable reluctance machines. Each machine type is well modeled in one chapter and its control aspects are explained in a companion chapter. A couple of chapters introduce the reader to electromechanical power conversion from ground-up. What I appreciate about this book the most is its uniform information density. Torrey managed to spread new information among in a way that a reader does not feel either overwhelmed or bored.
The book also contains a couple of chapters on voltage and current control with helpful examples. I often reach for this book when calculating PI compensator gains or refreshing the proper sign convention in the DQ domain transformation.
Torrey did a terrific job writing up his vast knowledge into this valuable and succinct publication. I highly recommend this book for any student of engineer involved in power electronics and electric machines.
