Interesting things you probably just took for granted

Aside from the fact that Daniel Boorstin writes with real grace, which makes this final volume in his trilogy about American life a pleasure to read, it is filled with a consideration of subjects that you most likely never thought about as being part of "American history"--at least as it's taught in school--yet these are the events and the people who made the world we actually LIVE in: the businessmen and idea people who created the mail-order catalogue, the department store, the oil industry, and even the divorce industry, which played a surprising commercial role in the American west. Boorstin tells about people whose names have become household words (like Sears & Roebuck, or Dunn & Bradstreet)and how their ideas helped build the country and the life we know today; he tells about the cattle drives and the range wars; about inventions, and business, and how the democratization of shopping in the big department stores was a quintessentially American development. Every chapter has its fascination for the reader--at least for THIS reader. Ideas or practices that I simply accepted as "the way things are" prove often to be unique American inventions, and knowing this helps us know more about who we are, and why we are seen as different from the rest of the world (even as they start to copy us in so many ways).

Acerbic Critic

Many have described Boorstin's "The Americans" series as being right-wing. I do not concur. He writes about a period, in reality our age, as if it is still happening because it is. The third and final book in the series shows that he is unsure if the changes from the Civil War to the present day have not all been for the betterment of mankind. Although written three decades ago, I would say that this book is more relevant than ever. I think that everyone should read "The Americans" series. There is a bit more of Boorstin's curmugeony personality in this last book, but don't let that disuade you from enjoying a very complex perspective of America in the Twentieth Century and, very possibly, the Twenty-First Century.

Some Things Can't Be Improved Upon

Took up piano again and tried a couple of "adult" books but wasn't feeling the love. Finally remembered the name of these from my piano lessons 50 years ago. This series is the best, hands down.

One of my favorite teaching books after JT Easiest Piano Couse book 1

I use this book for students after they have completed John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course book one (teaches 10 notes F bass to G treble). I also use JT Easiest Piano Course 2 for younger students. This books adds three lower bass notes first, CDE and, after those are mastered, adds ABC to the Treble. It teaches much technique and allows the student to read, understand and master the notes, not just memorize.

An interesting book, the pieces are fun, the CD recordings are horrible

I purchased this book as well as "The Piano Handbook". I don't feel this book is technically "bad" (It's actually pretty decent on what is played), the book - and CD seem to try a little too hard to sell itself as being "fun" at the expense of information and accuracy.

To highlight the main problem I had with this book - the CD. I listened to the CD and the piano parts were not alone but also included bells, a metronome, and a few other sounds as well - outside just the piano. I purchased the book to learn the piano, by hearing the piano piece only being played so I could study it. What did I get? Sounded more like a small band playing the music to keep kids interested. Maybe the book is just aimed for kids more than adults.

Outside the lousy CD, the songs seem to drop the person into the middle-end of the pool right off the bat. How so? Playing with two hands at the same time. I'm pretty sure this is the beginning of the series, and if I'm wrong then I apologize, but I don't think I am.

The songs felt a little too difficult at first, with almost no instruction about how to properly play. This diminishes how well it'd work for learning on one's own.

Do I feel it's an OK buy? Quite honestly, yes I do under a few circumstances:
1. Buy another book too. Personally I got "The Piano Handbook" ([...]) which I find much more helpful for the beginning stuff.
2. Try to find a teacher - especially if #1 isn't met.
3. Be prepared to work through with little use of the CD to gauge your progress. I wish I could say more positive on the CD.

I'm a beginning piano player, only playing for a very short time. If you have some knowledge already, this book may be OK for you then.

Too depressing for me

I like some of DS's work, but this was too depressing for too long. Even the happier times seemed haunted and dark. It's a personal preference, not an assessment of the writer's talent. If I'm going to go on an emotional roller coaster, I'd like the highs to be as intense as the lows. The abuse was hard to read and hard to believe (even knowing that parents have done worse). Thankfully, our society has evolved to one that supports the best interests of the child enabling teachers, family friends, and physicians to look for and report signs of abuse. I also like it when authors spend more time on the endings,taking the story beyond finding a love interest. We all know that's not the end of the story! It's a good thing, and yes, I like it, but what women do with their lives after living through a trauma or disaster, is often monumental and even more satisfying and inspirational. I think Gabbie had great potential as a writer, social change agent, loving mother, or a caregiver to victims of abuse. Whatever path she chose, I would have enjoyed reading about a bit of her happier future beyond finding a man.

You know, I've been a HUGE Danielle Steel fan for a long time now, so I was definitely looking forward to reading this novel. The summary of the story was a bit different from her other novels, so I decided, "why not". So off I went; I dove head first into the story.

I must say that I was expecting something very different from what was actually delivered. For one thing, the plot was saturated with twists and curves. It felt as though I was riding a roller coaster of sorts because I couldn't foresee what would happen next. Every turn took me in a new direction and I truly enjoyed that aspect of this story.

The other thing I enjoyed was that this story as a whole transcended time, meaning, it could have taken place at the turn of the 19th, 20th or 21 century. It's setting was quite malleable so you as a reader couuld picture this story unfolding in nearly any era.

The final aspect of the story I enjoyed was that it was believeable. Some of Danielle's stories are a bit out there, but this one is believeable. The reader could see how these events could happen to any young person at anytime.

So overall,"The Long Road Home" was a great novel. It is definitely worth reading, particularly if you're in the mood for something unique. Enjoy!

Another winner by Danielle Steel. After reading this story I felt as if I knew the heroine Gabrielle, Gabby. She put such depth into this character that after each tragedy she insures you alternate between crying and cheering for her. It's hard to believe that this is,a novel and not a biography! I can't wait for my next one!!!

Very helpfull

Good book with very helpful ideas and stories on how to prosper and survive in a family business. It is good to see other families having similar issues, opportunities, stumble blocks and conflicts as ours. I don't feel so alone anymore.
Worth the price for the peace of mind I got. If you are part of a family business this book is a must.

A Brilliant and Pure Scintillating Story

If you have not read this book, then I'm begging you....yes, begging you....to add it to your bookshelf. Then, bump it up to the top of that to-be-read shelf that accumulates so much dust. Dust if off, pick it up, and lose yourself in this alluring story! You won't regret it!

Tailspin! That's exactly what I found myself in from the first sentence, not the first page, the very first sentence in this book! Wendi Cassel has delivered a brilliant tale of desire, betrayal, healing, and commitment to the pages, unlike any other I've read. There are so many times while reading this book that I found myself holding my breath one minute and squeeing with delight the next.

Hailey is a character with whom I can easily connect and identify. She has struggled with the pain of loss, fought for her place in this unfair universe which is life, and she constantly analyzes each situation with what ifs. We've all had them, I'm sure. What if I had done this differently? What if this happens? This is simply Hailey, and she relies on her head instead of her heart. But, when she meets Andrew, everything changes. Hailey has never needed anybody for anything, but she was surprised to discover she needed Andrew.

Andrew Grayson is the debonaire aristocrat who is now my new book boyfriend (we all know I love a British hero). He reminds me of so many of my book boyfriends in the past, yet he isn't like those boyfriends. He is able to stand alone in this category of highness I tend to place my literary heroes. You will know the ones I'm talking about: Christian, Gabriel, Edward, Gideon, and Bones. Andrew has the world at his feet, yet he is caught in a web of lies, deceit, and betrayal at the hands of his own family. Andrew also suffers from the disease of What ifs, but Andrew's what ifs were so special, my cheeks hurt from smiling so much.

This is not a love at first sight story, although there is an attraction or fascination at first sight. The pacing of the romance that blossoms between Andrew and Hailey is perfectly paced. But, this story isn't just about a romance between Andrew and Hailey. It is so much more! There are betrayals on so many levels. Family secrets that have been hidden for years are uncovered....so many family secrets! Torment of one family became commonplace. Yet, there is healing in so many different ways. The chapter headings alone seem to tell a story of their own, and they are so fitting.

Okay, so what did this book do for me? It made me cry...and squee...and swoon...and scream OMG along with a few expletives. My heart was torn out at one point, but stitched together and put back in my body the next moment. My breath was taken away, but I was recusitated only to be transformed. Have you ever experienced that feeling that something really bad is coming, but you don't know what it is?
