About the Author
Ray T. Malbrough was born in New Orleans and was raised in the "Pays des Cajuns" Region of southeastern Louisiana. He learned the basics of hoodoo in his early teens with the permission and encouragement of his mother. At age 19, he started working in a New Orleans tearoom as a reader/advisor, and has since earned a good reputation as a Hoodoo worker all over the region surrounding his hometown of Houma. He is a 1982 graduate of the Seax-Wica Seminary founded and directed by Dr. Raymond Buckland. The author is active in the parapsychology Association in Thibodeaux, Louisiana. Today, Ray is a full time reader/advisor and hoodoo worker in his home in Houma.

Meh ok

Eh, it's OK. It's more of a white lighter version of hoodoo. Still not totally bad for a beginner to hoodoo, but I found all the warnings against cursing just to sickly sweet for my tastes.
Great recipes though so that alone is worth the buy but what can you expect from Llewellyn?
Anyway Ray pretty much strips away the Catholic teachings of hoodoo and simply gives the spellwork.
Someone who is coming from a different magical system may find this book useful if they already understand the basics of magic.
This book isnt really for complete beginners to magic. So don't think it's going to explain in great detail such as "use herb x because blank".

Great Little Book

I really like this book as it explains for those who don't already know how this "magick stuff" works and it's a refresher course for those of us who do...and its recipes are relied on by several shop owners, including by her own admission, Miss Catherine Yronwode However, unlike Miss Cat, it explains things in a way I, having been raised Irish-Catholic, can understand. I am a strange mix of Druid and Irish Catholic. I pray to the saints, as I just can't deal with the Pagan idea of praying to Egyptian/Greek/Roman Gods/Goddesses. My patron saints are Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Dymphna, Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Saint Nikolai II the New Martyr and Passion Bearer, and the soon-to-be canonized (as of April 27th, 2014) Pope John Paul II.
I'd recommend this book as a magickal recipe book for any serious practitioner of magick.
