About the Author
As well as forging a successful political career, President MICHAEL D. HIGGINS is also an author, poet, and broadcaster. He presented a television film on Montserrat, The Other Emerald Isle, and a documentary on the life of Dr. Noel Browne for RT�, Dr Browne Also Spoke. He has had four volumes of poetry published, most recently New and Selected Poems (Liberties Press), and has been included in a number of anthologies. He is the author of several books, has contributed chapters to over twenty publications, and was a columnist for Hot Press from 1982 until 1993. Higgins has campaigned for human rights and written about conflict in many parts of the world. He became the first recipient of the Se�n MacBride Peace Prize of the International Peace Bureau in Helsinki in 1992, and has twice been mayor of Galway.

Only Half the Story

Please note that this release only contains ONE disk, that is, Part One of Two. Half the story.

Do not be fooled like I was.

At the time of this review, Amazon does not offer Part Two. You will have to order directly from Big Finish productions.

It sure would be nice if both disks were sold together.

The post Charlie age begins for the 8th doctor as he takes on a new companion Lucy (played by Sheridan Smith) and an old foe the Daleks.

The is the first of the 8th doctor production broadcast on BBC radio and was the start of what is at the moment two seasons of 8th doctor adventures released both on radio and from Big Finish.

The twofold plot involves a planet Red Rocket Rising in dire straits and the leadership that has already left joyfully informing the still living survivors that an alien race known as the Daleks has graciously offered to help them.

Meanwhile the Doctor has to deal not only with Daleks but with the sudden appearance of Luce Miller in his Tardis (a la Donna Noble) finding that the Time Lords have stuck her with him for purposes yet unknown

I must confess I've never been a Dalek kind of guy and they tend to be my least favorite stories but the performances are good and Nick Briggs who does the Daleks for the new TV series as well pulls them off. What is actually going on se productions were made by Big Finished and were actually broadcast on BBC Radio.

It is a promising start to the series and with not only buying but getting the 2nd part, particularly if you are more interested in Daleks than me.

The Third Eighth Doctor

This is, essentially, the third launch for Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor. After the 1996 TV movie, which basically saddled a good character with a lukewarm story, and Big Finish's straight-to-CD audio adventures, this represents the Eighth Doctor's first proper broadcast series, first aired (or more properly, "aired") on BBC7. As such, I mostly enjoy it, though it feels awfully cluttered, especially for an audio drama, which has its own unique limits.

Lucie Miller, a teenager from the provinces, finds herself yanked forcibly aboard the TARDIS, where an astonished Doctor discovers he can't get rid of her now that he has her. But before the unwilling comrades get their heads around one another, they crash-land on a colonial planet with a blackened sky and bodies in the streets. They investigate the planet's mysterious circumstances, but before reaching any conclusions, a mysterious force answers the colonials' distress call: the Daleks.

As director Nicholas Briggs, who also plays the Daleks, says in the post-program extras, with this episode, the creative team tried to build a bridge between the classic TV series and the relaunched one. Arguably, they mostly succeed. It has the straight-up adventure tone which the classic series created so masterfully, but with the more taut, tightly structured pace we've grown to love since 2005. The classic series, let's admit, had copious unnecessary filler. This story has no such waste.

If I had to identify one problem with this story, I'd say:too many characters. In audio, we only recognize characters by their voices, and this fairly large cast, with eight named characters, forces us to keep lots of names going, and reconcile them with voices we might've heard twenty minutes ago. So too many characters means we have difficulty distinguishing one from another, especially when several have similar clipped, prim accents. Eight characters would seem sparse on TV, but is very busy on audio.

Overall, I found this episode enjoyable, though I admit, I'll probably require multiple listenings to savvy its full implications. It's a careful balance between the large, sometimes confusing cast, and the austere, no-nonsense storytelling. The Doctor's new companion Lucie (got some 'splaining to do) has an interesting attitude, and I look forward to seeing how she develops. Not everyone likes audio drama, but if you enjoy an interesting, non-visual story, consider giving this one a try.

Very Thorough

This is a historical and informative look at the Big Bend area of Texas, a largely uninhabited region. This was written in 1975, when the author, Ron C. Tyler, was executive director of the Texas State Historical Association, and it was reprinted in 2003. The book begins with an overview of the Big Bend, then proceeds to the early Spanish explorers; the Chihuahua Trail; the topographical engineers who came to the area; bandits who operated in the area; and, finally, Big Bend National Park. I enjoyed the book, and particularly enjoyed reading about the US Army's attempts to use camels by testing them in the Big Bend region. Definitely recommended!

A solid, authoritative history of Big Bend

The Big Bend region of Texas is one of the most remote and least populated areas of the United States. From the center of Big Bend National Park at The Basin it is more than 100 miles by road to the nearest Supermarket in Alpine.

The author has compiled an authoritative history of the sparsely-populated Big Bend. The prose is scholarly rather than poetic, but the story is fascinating. Included in the book are maps, old photographs, a listing and description of historic sites, a thorough bibliography, extensive notes, and an index.

The Spaniard Cabeza de Vaca and his colleagues probably passed through the Big Bend in the 1530s; and the Spanish conquest began in 1580. Later the tide was turned as the Apaches and Comanches in the 18th and 19th century depopulated the Big Bend with their constant raids on Mexican settlements. In the 19th century the "gringos" arrived at the Big Bend and established ranches, mines, and wax factories -- the wax coming from the candelilla plant. One of the most interesting sections of the book concerns the conflict between Mexican revolutionaries and bandits and the U.S army in the early part of the 20th century during the era of Pancho Villa. The book concludes with the creation of Big Bend National Park in 1955.

The Big Bend is a tough country with a colorful history and this book is worth reading, especially if you plan to visit Big Bend National Park.

An eloquent defender of human liberty

Gertrude Himmelfarb in her introduction to this collection of Acton's most important essays traces his family background, the part that Catholicism played in his intellectual life , and his general view of the world. Acton was an enormously well- read and highly respected intellectual figure in his own time. A strong Catholic and the editor of the Catholic journal, the Rambler he nonetheless did not follow easily any party- line and had difficulties when the Doctrine of Papal Infallibility was proclaimed. Most famous today for his dictum "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" he saw how Power unregulated led to human beings briging out the worst in themselves.He was a strong defender of human liberty , and an admirer of the American political system . He argued that historical thinking " is a powerful ingredient in the formation of character and the training of talent, and our historical judgments have as much to do with hopes of heaven as public or private conduct."
His defense of Liberty involved the following definition: "By liberty I mean the assurance that every man shall be protected in doing what he believes his duty against the influence of authority and majorities,custom and opinion.'

Need some history background

Very good, an examination of the uneasy relations between Church, State, and the masses from the point of view of one who believed strongly in morality and justice. Tying many social, political and ecclesiastical movements together in broad sweeping generalizations, it is not the sort of treatment you would find in a standard history book, but insightful and thought-provoking. But have your history book by your side as you read this.

But too soon Southie becomes a place controlled by resident gangster Whitey Bulger, later revealed to be an FBI informant even as he ran the drug culture that Southie supposedly never had. It was a world primed for the escalation of class violence-and then, with deadly and sickening inevitability, of racial violence that swirled around forced busing. MacDonald, eight years old when the riots hit, gives an explosive account of the asphalt warfare. He tells of feeling “part of it all, part of something bigger than I’d ever imagined, part of something that was on the national news every night.”

In this plainly written, powerful memoir, MacDonald, now 32, details not only his own story of growing up in Southie, Boston's Irish Catholic enclave, but examines the myriad ways in which the media and law enforcement agencies exploit marginalized working-class communities. MacDonald was one of nine children born (of several fathers) to his mother, Helen MacDonald, a colorful woman who played the accordion in local Irish pubs to supplement her welfare checks. Having grown up in the Old Colony housing project, he describes his neighbors' indigence and pride of place, as well as their blatant racism (in 1975 the anti-busing riots in Southie made national headlines) and their deep denial of the organized crime and entrenched drug culture that was destroying the youth and social fabric. MacDonald's account is filled with vivid episodes: of his brother Davey's horrific incarceration in Mass Mental and ultimate suicide; of the time Helen took her older kids to the hospital, where her current lover was a patient, to beat him up after he denied he was the father of the child she was carrying; of the murder of his brother Frankie by his compatriots after the police shot him in an armored-car robbery. But perhaps most shocking is the accusation that the FBI was paying Southie's leading gangster, Whitey Bulger, as an informant although they knew he was the neighborhood kingpin. The notorious anti-busing riots of 1974 forever altered the insular working-class Irish community of South Boston, branding it indelibly as a dangerous, racist enclave. Anti-violence activist MacDonald grew up there and lost four out of eight siblings to violence in those dark times; his debut assesses both his family history, and related secret tales of class strife, bigotry, corruption, and vanished lives. MacDonald utilizes the classically Irish viewpoint of the stoic child to re-create a harsh arena of a 1970s ghetto and urban poverty. His single Ma felt blessed when a local politician secured her entrance to the majority-Irish Old Colony project, the best place in the world''; once there, the MacDonalds had to prove their mettle against delinquents with shotguns, thus acquiring the patina of craziness necessary for survival. At first, the nuances of color seemed minor against a vividly rendered backdrop of economic difficulty and the depraved mainstreaming of hard drugs and street crime. Then came the riots; MacDonalds surefooted (neither hardened nor sentimental) narrative takes us through the years of malaise and violence that followed, as politically connected gangsters, such as the notorious Whitey Bulger, expanded the areas drug trade while violently enforcing a macho myth of silent Southie unity, itself built on the long-burnished notion that the white community was somehow different from such similarly working-class, embattled black areas as Roxbury. This explication of how such phenomena of white class-consciousness encouraged the wholesale deterioration of his neighborhood and contributed to the demise of some 250 young people is a devastating cultural indictment. Gritty, raw, dirty, out there , truthful

This was a great book. The author spared no reader his descriptions of life in the Irish projects in the 60-80's. Drugs, violence, suicides, broken families- it was all put out there. Nothing was done in a manner to garner sympathy or sadness. This was a true tale of life how it was for this author. It was a hard life. In a way it was like reading a book about a Holocaust survivor. It was a great book.
I would highly recommend this book.

A competent, sad story of death and drugs in Southie

This is a competent story – memoir – of what it was like growing up in Southie in the last few decades of the 20th century. Lots of pain and heartache in what is written here. One cannot help but feel helpless at the social problems and corruption evident in the stories. Whitey Bulger comes across as a far less dangerous person that he really was, in this book. See the Netflix documentary for more information on quite TND huge FBI, Boston police, Massachusetts police corruption of the times. Worth reading.

Accurate. From someone who didn't live in "Southie" but in "Old Colony" at that time!

You'll see some people chime in here about this book, from "Southie". But Southie and Old Colony don't equal the same thing. You can be from the point and not be anything like someone growing up in Old Colony. Old Colony wasn't the same as D street or Old Harbor. Secondly, my aunt is mentioned in the book as skoochie(sp?). I'm not particularly fond of being from Old Colony or having my aunt in this book, but it's who i am. Lastly, i was good friends with Tommy Veins before he got out of cotrol and died. It's a sad story overall, if tommysdad is here, i'd like to say that my condolences, but this portrayal is not far from fact at all. I was there and grew up where these things happened. And let me tell you, the book is pretty accurate. Slight details here and there might be slightly off, but for the overall idea, Accurate. Everyone knew his mom... she was an outcast for sure and he mentions this several times. I personally couldn't put my own mom out there, but kudos for him for trying to be accurate.

You'll see some people chime in here from "Southie" but unless they were from Old Colony i wouldn't take their perspective as seriously. And just as a point of argument a lot of people from "Southie" didn't like this book coming out because it casted a shadow on the town where whities affects of keeping things within southie are still being felt.

Overall i'd say read this book. It's as close as you are going to get to truly understanding what happened there at that time.

Because it is written with such clarity and so concisely, it's a quick, informative read. You walk away with the feeling you have a clear understanding of a complex topic. JP Jones did a amazing job of cutting through the excess babble and getting to the point. A HOME Bartenders Guide to Making Cocktails like a Pro

At last, a book for the HOME Bartender! This is an excellent resource if you enjoy making cocktails at home and being your own host.

The 12 Bottles include 8 Liquors, 2 Vermouths and 2 Bitters and covers drinks with 1 Bottle (Pick Your Poision), 3 Bottles (Adding Bitters & Vermouth) and 4 Bottles (Orange Liqueur). Ice (otherwise known as Cocktail Ice) gets it's own several page section and is well worth the read. My favorite section is The Bottles. Everything you could possible want to know about each of the 12 is listed in its own section with complimentary recipes! It'll give you a new appreciation for each of them.

The books ends with Putting It All Together which includes some expanded, new virgin drinks instead of the typical ones you tend to find in bartender guides and drink books. No Shirley Temple in this one! Beer, Wine & Cider has found a place among this section as well as finishing off with Garnishs, Syrups and Liqueurs which includes a wonderful Cherry Syrup recipe.

This is the best book I've come across for people who want a good drink at home. For people who like a cocktail. For people who like food and don't make cocktails because so many home attempts are terrible (and so many restaurants/bars are about as bad). It's terrific for entertaining, from a few friends to a lot, but it's really helpful for anyone who wants to enjoy a good drink.
