About the Author
Charles Zastrow, MSW, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus in Social Work at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he chaired the Social Work Department for six years. He has also been the Assistant Director and Professor in the Social Work Program at George Williams College in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, where he currently teaches. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Wisconsin, Dr. Zastrow has worked as a practitioner for various agencies, chaired social work accreditation site visit teams for the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), and served on the Commission on Accreditation of CSWE. He also is a member of the BPD board. A leader in social work education and a bestselling author, Dr. Zastrow has written more than 45 articles in professional journals as well as nine books, including four textbooks: THE PRACTICE OF SOCIAL WORK, SOCIAL WORK WITH GROUPS, SOCIAL PROBLEMS: ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS, and UNDERSTANDING HUMAN BEHAVIOR AND THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT (with Dr. Karen Kirst-Ashman).

SEL�UK DEMIREL was born in Artvin, Turkey, in 1954. He trained as an architect and moved to Paris in 1978, where he still lives. His illustrations and books have appeared in many prominent European and American publications.

Adore the work of C. Monet, and found the changes after his cataracts were corrected to be illuminating as he dealt so much with light in his paintings. Here John Berger 'studies' how cataracts affect his sight, and the process of changes after 'correction'. I have followed his writings for over 30 years and am charmed with this gifting for the Holiday.
Truly a treat.

These heartfelt and ego-free sentiments… will provide the reader with a notice that you’re about to read a sports autobiography that comes from a much different shelf… than the overflowing one filled with mindless… me… me… mantra… of countless athletes.

As the story begins in childhood… the reader at first will think that the writing has an “infantile” feel to it… then as it continues… you’ll slowly start to realize… that the telling of the story is as if you’re actually inside young “June” (Julius’s nickname with family members… short for Junior)… and you’re actually looking through his eyes… you even feel as if you’re his size… as he continues to jump… and jump.. and jump… trying to be able to look out the window in his home. The love between all members of the Erving family is both touching and nostalgic. The lessons that come along with the love from “The Doctor’s” Mother… reminds you of the way America used to be… and at least the way you wish it to be now. Along with an older sister… there’s a Father not in his daily life… and who dies young… there is also younger brother Marky… who is sickly… and idolizes Julius… and not only lives through his older brother’s accomplishments… but deluges June with questions on all subjects. Julius is Marky’s protector… and he loves him so deeply… that his short life of illness… is one of the tragedies that will never leave The Doctor’s soul for all eternity.

Order… Order… Order…

You’ll come to appreciate that Erving loves order in his life… everywhere! His pencils need to be in order… his clothes need to be in order… he loves sports because there is an order to it. Order… Order… Order! Regarding basketball… “What I have is powerful and easily observed love for the game.”

He is always jumping… rising up… jumping… rising up! His coaches become Father figures… whether in “sal” ball (Salvation Army)… high school… or college. Despite his playground machismo and artistry… he also likes the plays… the signals from the coach… the order. Growing up in the tumultuous sixties… The Doctor… refuses to hate… despite bigotry… despite continuous pressure from those around him. His evolving into a playground legend… is once again written as if you’re viewing it through his very eyes. The basketball accomplishments that probably every reader is aware of is definitely covered in this book… but it becomes secondary… to the man… the person… the gentleman… the American… the class act… that even during shortcomings… and moments of weakness… Julius Erving one way or another eventually paints with class. He doesn’t blame other people… he not only stands up… he rises… he rises… up!

The writing… really seems more than mere writing… in this book. I don’t know if a scholar would call it first person… second person… narrative… I just don’t know. What I do know… it’s like poetry… with its own flowing rhythm… and a view from the reader’s eyes… into Erving’s heart… and out through his eyes… for a panoramic absorption of The Doctor’s lifetime experiences… and emotions.

I am the same age as Julius… I was born in the same part of the country as Julius… basketball was as big a part of my life as his… and the individual basketball exploits shared… I was definitely looking forward to when I bought this book… I am especially pleased … that younger readers will get an education regarding one very important historical fact. Basketball didn’t start and end with Michael Jordan… before Jordan there was The Doctor… and before The Doctor… there was Elgin Baylor… and I’m ever so glad… that Julius makes it perfectly clear… that it was Elgin Baylor that inspired him to pattern his play after… jumping… jumping… rising up!

But… in the end… the power… and dignity… of this book… is not the basketball… it’s the man… Julius Erving!

Probably the best sports autobiography I have ever read, and I have read a lot of them. It's a page turner and really emotional. It gave me a lot of insights into the man, the times, and especially, the game. I bought 5 of 'em to give to the ballers I play with. Just great.

He is one of the Greatest Basketball Players and also a very down to earth Brother. no matter what the term you use, be it Swag, Cool, Cold, Smooth Dr J was that cat who had it like that. now this Book Covers his Career and what happen off the court, various Ups and downs and what shaped up his life then and now. he left a mark on and off the court. He was a Black SuperStar in an Era where there weren't a whole lot as you have now. he broke alot of Ground. Doc was so Badd He made the NBA come to him and Bring him there. Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkens, Vince Carter, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne wade, Lebron James amongest others owe a debt to the Greatness and Ground Breaking Player that Dr J Julius Erving was.

About the Author

Ralph Fehr received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 1983 and the M.E. degree in electrical engineering (power) from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1987. He has worked in the generation engineering field, designing power distribution and control systems for nuclear and fossil-fired power plants. Mr. Fehr also has worked for electric utilities for more than 15 years in the operations, planning, and design areas, including transmission, distribution, and substation engineering.

Teaching has always been an important aspect of Mr. Fehr's career. On an adjunct basis, he has taught courses ranging from computer operating systems to mathematics to power system analysis for several institutions, including the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, St. Petersburg Junior College, and the University of South Florida at Tampa. Since 1996, he also has taught a review course for candidates for the professional engineer examination through the Florida Engineering Society.

Mr. Fehr is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and is a registered professional engineer in New Mexico and Florida. His biography is published in Who's Who in Science and Engineering.

Electricity has been an essential part of our lives since the late nineteenth century. During the early twentieth century, electricity began replacing steam as the primary power source in industrial plants. As factories became larger and more complex, so did their power requirements. Accordingly, engineers were faced with a new challenge: how to distribute electricity safely, reliably, and economically within the industrial facility. Although this challenge has been addressed for over a century, the theories, requirements, and procedures for safe, reliable, and economical industrial power distribution have not been presented in textbook form. This work attempts to do so by drawing on more than one hundred years of lessons learned and refinements made in the electrical power distribution field.

The book begins by analyzing the source of the electricity: the utility system. Requirements, including the delivery voltage and the topology of the source, are explored, along with their impact on the operation and reliability of the industrial facility. Next, a powerful calculation method using the per-unit system is reviewed, and this method is applied extensively throughout the text. Other power source issues, such as short-circuit availability and transformer sizing are discussed, followed by a brief presentation on metering methods.

The next area covered is medium-voltage distribution systems within the industrial facility. Guidelines for selecting the optimum voltage are presented. Various transformer connections are analyzed to determine their effects on the behavior of the electrical system. Ferroresonance and methods of eliminating its undesirable effects are introduced. Methods of conductor sizing consistent with the National Electrical Code� (NEC�) are also presented.

Two chapters are devoted to the calculation of fault currents and the sizing of protective equipment such as circuit breakers and fuses. The method of symmetrical components is used to analyze unbalanced fault conditions.

Raceway design, including the design of conduit, duct banks, and cable trays, is covered consistently with NEC� specifications.

Switchgear and motor control centers, two types of equipment used extensively to distribute electricity within industrial facilities, are examined in detail, with a focus on specification and selection requirements.

Methods of starting and controlling motors are discussed; variable frequency drives are briefly introduced. A detailed tutorial on ladder logic is included. The application of shunt capacitors for power factor correction is presented, and a chapter on power quality rounds out the text.

Tabular data reprinted by permission from IEEE Stds. 141-1993 and 242-1986, are presented throughout the text. The IEEE disclaims any responsibility or liability resulting from the placement and use in the described manner. Additional engineering data are presented in the appendices: units of measurement, circuit analysis techniques, impedance data, ampacity data reprinted from the NEC™, conduit data, and others. These data provide a valuable reference source for the engineer.

This volume serves not only as an informative textbook, but also as a concise reference book. Objectives are clearly stated at the beginning of each chapter, and a succinct summary is presented at the end of each chapter. Questions to test the reader's comprehension of important concepts and problems to check the reader's ability to apply theory to solve practical problems are provided for each chapter.

The material in the text affords a solid foundation in the field of industrial power distribution, preparing the reader for more in-depth exploration of any of the topics presented. The book may be used at the upper-division undergraduate or graduate level. An understanding of basic power system analysis is the only prerequisite for fully comprehending the material presented.

Fantastic reference for power engineering

Dr. Fehr covers power engineering topics in an easy to follow and easy to reference format. I purchased this book for a class in the past and later lost it in a move. I missed it so much I purchased it again recently. The topics covered are currrently used in power design, and the book makes a great quick reference for the PE exam.
