Invaluable guide for librarians/teachers/ parents

I have all three guides in the "Best Books" series. The ones for Grades 6-9, and Grades 9-12 were purchased because of my teaching background, but this particular guide was bought as a parent trying to put together an age appropriate reading list for my preschooler. As with the other guides in the series, this book is thematically arranged, i.e.

Literature [Books for Younger Readers, Fiction for Older Readers, which includes world literature,Fairy Tales [includes world literature],Mythology,Poetry & Plays
Biography [adventurers & explorers, artists, composers, entertainers, and writers, contemporary and historical Americans, scientists, inventors, and naturalists, sports figures, world figures]
The Arts and Language [art and architecture, communication, music, performing arts]
History and Geography [in general, paleontology & dinosaurs, anthropology and prehistoric life, archaeology, world history, geographical regions]
Social institutions and Issues [business and economics, ecology and environment, government and politics, religion and holidays, social groups]

Only useful for librarians

I purchased this when I just had a first child with a grand dream of providing all the wonderful books for him. It's very hard to judge a book based on the information given by this "Best Books" book, as it surveys hundreds of thousands of books with a sentence or two (uninteresting) descriptions of each. It's not for individuals, but more for institutional buyers.

Mariel's escort to the seven temples carries out his duties without questions or emotions. She knows that any plea for her release would fall on deaf ears. But as their journey stretches from days to weeks and her body is used in countless sex rituals, something curious starts to happen. Behsart's control weakens as Cavan grows ever stronger. Time is running out and the lusty demons are determined to claim Mariel for their chosen bride, but Mariel refuses to give up hope. Her soul is at stake, and if she can appease the demons long enough to help Cavan oust Behsart from his body, then there is a small chance that she can save them both.

BELLY OF THE BEAST is an erotic fantasy tale that takes the reader to the extreme. Fans of Anne Rice's "Sleeping Beauty" trilogy may enjoy this story as Mariel is taken from home against her will and thrust into a world of relentless sexual mastery and forced pleasure. The absence of outright cruelty may make Acuna's BELLY OF THE BEAST more palatable for some, but readers with a low/medium tolerance for heavy BDSM themed stories are strongly urged to bypass this novella. Daily Guide to Miracles by Oral Roberts

I received this (2nd printing) book in LIKE NEW CONDITION. I read this book for the first time in the 1980's and Roberts' Seed Faith steps to "claiming my miracle" became a reality. It is a book that I have used many times over to teach my children about tithing and SEED-FAITH offerings-- when it is given in obedience and with the right attitude, it will return to you in due time.
I will also never forget a testimony I heard from a Southern California businessman while I was in college (1962-66). He claimed he wasn't a Christian, but he learned that HE COULD NEVER OUT-GIVE GOD. He made it a practice to tithe on his business profits, because when he didn't, his profit margin dropped. (I don't remember his name, but he owned a chain of grocery stores. I surely wish I could have heard his story upon his retirement.)

This is a book that I have bought several copies of and gifted it to friends. It is full of real-life experiences combined with the steps to learning how to pray. In a nutshell, Oral Roberts shares how God taught him to meet ALL his financial needs through SEED FAITH giving and prayer.

This is not a name and claim book, this is truth, back to basics of sowing and reaping, believing for a miracle.
In the simplest form, the way Jesus meant for you. At my church we have been buying these up and passing them on to one another.
Thank You Oral Roberts! the seeds you planted so long ago are still producing, and your harvest is in heaven.

Asking them also helps students master the tricky rules of the interrogative. Quotations are brilliant flashes of wit expressed in the shortest space possible, often just a sentence or two. You have conversation starters such as, "How much time do you spend each week in cars? Why?" There is a section in each chapter for vocabulary building. A section on common sayings is included, as well. To increase the conversation we have such questions as this: "Do you prefer to drive in the city or the country? Flat or hills?" Each chapter in the book concludes with quotations. An example is this one by Woody Allen, "I have bad reflexes. I was once run over by a car being pushed by two guys." The art of conversation, once considered the sign of a civilized individual, seems less common today. Yet I treasure the moments of sharing experiences, collecting news, and exchanging ideas. I make a point of knowing my neighbors, allowing casual greetings to become long conversations, and making time to explore in depth the feelings and perceptions of friends, students, and relatives. These natural conversations provide information, encouragement, and pleasure.

Many people say that they are too busy to have long talks. Other people prefer to watch YouTube, play computer games, chat via email rather than talk to relatives, co-workers, and friends. Many Americans, it seems, have forgotten how to hold good, deep conversations - or even a friendly chat on the phone. I suspect this lack of real communication lessens their daily joy.

English language learners, of course, face many more barriers to have a satisfying conversation in English. First, English remains a confusing, difficult, and strange language. It's very easy to feel uncomfortable when speaking a new language - whether a second or fourth.� English students in my advanced speaking skills courses often ask questions like:

How do start a conversation?
What questions do I ask?
How can I keep a real conversation going?
How do I share agreement - or disagreement - in a polite way?
How can I share my experiences in clear manner with appropriate vocabulary?
How I can have better, more engaging conversations?

Compelling Conversations: Questions and Quotations on Timeless Topics addresses these issues for both native and non-native speakers. The focus remains on learning by doing and making "good mistakes". (Good mistakes, by the way, are natural mistakes that help us learn so we can make different and better "good mistakes" next time.)

Each of the 45 thematic chapters focuses on a promising conversation topic. Every chapter includes 30 or more questions (both direct and indirect), 10 or more targeted academic vocabulary words, a few proverbs to paraphrase, and 10 or more quotations to discuss from a variety of perspectives. Although designed for advanced English language learners, many intermediate ESL and EFL students will plenty of material to use can can benefit from exposure to authentic questions, common phrases, and new vocabulary words.

A gold mine of resources

I first tried this fantastic textbook with a high intermediate student that I tutor. I was amazed from the start at how naturally the conversation flowed. We were only halfway through the first set of questions when she decided to buy her own copy. Each of the 45 chapters includes a vocabulary section and list of around 12 to 15 classic quotations, along with between thirty and forty questions. The chapters can be used in any order, but I recommend starting with chapter one as it orients the students to the textbook and shows them how to get the most out of subsequent chapters. Either in the classroom or one on one, it's accessible to intermediate students and challenges advanced students. The quotations, from Socrates to Shaw and from Picasso to Pete Rose, are all identified by name, when they lived, and what they did. This book is truly a treasure.

Where was this book when I needed it?

As a longtime ESL student and medical professional, I wish I had this book when I was preparing for the "English Proficiency Exam" in London.

It goes beyond the boring dialogs of most ESL books and provides great current conversations that fit our crazy modern times.

For instances:

"Are sex, love and marriage linked in your mind?"

"What does your partner do that annoys you?"

"Will your partner love you with wrinkles?"

These are good questions!

I also like the proverbs:"If it's torn it can't be worn." (Persian)

Excellent book, great learning tool, absolutely at the top of the list in its category!

Fantastic Book!

These conversation starters are not just for ESL students but for anyone who is a bit shy or has trouble speaking around people. The questions are engaging and interesting and draws people into a variety of diverse subjects ranging from "Does your dog have a personality?" to "Have you ever had to hire/fire someone or work for a crazy boss?" The book also has may jokes, quotes and proverbs that often bring common day improper english into the mix. A must have book!
